The medical situation in Togo was deeply affected by the political
crisis of 1992-1993 which was translated by a dramatic fall of the
public expenditure of health and caused exodus of great number of
qualified professionals. The quality and the availability of the care
strongly decreased. The needs for the population as regards health
are enormous. The infant mortality rate is 137 per 1000 and represents
almost half of the total rate of mortality. The morbidity caused by
the prevalence of infectious diseases and parasitic, in the forefront
of which malaria , is also high.
Concerning
the VIH AIDS, on a population of 4,5 million people, the number
of declared HIV-positive individuals exceeds the 146,000 for a percentage
of 6% of the 15-45 year old population. This figure could if nothing
is made double within five year and quadruple to 2014. The principal
risk lies in the under valuation of the potential of propagation of
the VIH at Togo, resulting from the information's lack. Currently,
20% of the questioned people estimate that the condoms are not useful
and not enough people knows the modes of transmission of disease.
In priority sector, the strategy of the
Association rests on the following points:
- The program of restoration and of equipment of the medical infrastructures,
which aims at giving in state the centers of health of proximity
- The rehabilitation of the dispensaries, centers of health and hospitals
secondary
- The development of program of essential drugs. That will make it
possible to offer with the personnel looking after an adequate framework
of work and an accessible area for the patients
